FAQ

TRANSLATION AND RELATED SERVICES

What is the difference between a translator and an interpreter?
Non-experts often use these two terms synonymously. Actually, they are two totally different jobs: a translator works on written texts adapting their content into the target language and culture while an interpreter allows the verbal communication among people speaking different languages.

Are proofreading and post-editing machine translation (PEMT) consequent phases of the same process?
No! Proofreading is the final phase of the translation process and it aims to detect and correct inaccuracies such as wrong words, formatting errors and misuses of punctuation. Post-editing machine translation (PEMT) aims to verify the linguistic correctness of texts generated by an automatic translation engine. It can happen at different levels (soft, medium, hard), depending on the final quality desired.

What are CAT tools?
CAT tools (Computer Aided/Assisted Translation) are professional computer assisted translation softwares which speed up the translation process and guarantuee an increased consistency in a text or between similar texts thanks to specific terminology databases.

Are translation and localization synonymous?
No! Translation is a text conversation process from a language to another one which focus mainly on the linguistic aspect. It doesn’t mean translation a text mindlessly or word by word because a translation is based on a deeper understing of the source text. On the other hand, localization is “version 2.0” of the translation or more accurately an adaptation process of a product or service (i.e. websites, softwares, computer games) to the linguistic and cultural system of the target geo-linguistic area. For successful completation of this process, it is mandatory taking into account technical standards, stylistic requirements as well as expectations and demands of the target market.
